Rona was up by seven, and within the next hour she had dialed Brenda’s number twelve times. There was nothing quite so disturbing to her as a busy signal. She tried to concentrate on other things, so that her mind might become preoccupied with something else. She dusted the furniture for the first time in weeks. Eight cigarettes passed for breakfast. Her expense reports were brought up to date. Finally she harassed an operator into checking the line and was told that Brenda’s receiver was off the hook. She slammed her own receiver down with such force that the glass tabletop under the telephone cracked. Incredibly, the phone began to ring almost instantly.
